ATM has forged extensive relationships with all the major players in the international merchandising industry. One in particular is GILDAN the world's leading apparel company - manufacturer of quality t-shirts and leisurewear. Gildan's commitment to excellence extends beyond the company's products to Gildan's corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship. Gildan's corporate citizenship policies strongly target three main areas: Labour Relations, Community Involvement and Environmental Sustainability.
Labour Relations:
Gildan's wholely-owned and contracted plants comply with its strict internal code of conduct, local and international laws and the codes to which it adheres, including those of WRAP and the Fair Labor Association. The Company's code of conduct specifies guidelines pertaining to hours of work, compensation and benefits, health and safety, environmental practices, harassment and abuse, non-discrimination, freedom of association, the prohibition of forced labour and the employment of children. To verify the facilities' compliance with the principles and ensure transparency, audits are conducted on a regular basis by independent external and internal auditors.
Community Relations:
Gildan strives to create sustainable development in every location where it operates. Investment and participation in community projects, education programs and constructive engagements with NGOs means Gildan is a true member of the community. As an example of this leadership, Gildan spearheaded the establishment of the Central American Polytechnic Institute, created to develop trained personnel for the textile, apparel and electro-mechanic industries. In addition to Gildan's first donation of US $500,000, the Company committed to 50 scholarships per year over the next 5 years.
Gildan is also involved in the development of the communities where it operates through a generous donation program focusing on Youth education and Humanitarian aid.
Environmental Sustainability:
Gildan has taken a leadership role in adopting sustainable environmental practices in the apparel manufacturing industry. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification ensures no harmful chemicals and materials were used in the manufacturing of Gildan garments. Programs to reduce and recycle both natural resources and energy are implemented in our factories. The innovative BIOTOPE wastewater treatment system uses microorganisms to virtually eliminate all dyes and chemicals. The resulting water is shared with local communities and agri-businesses. This is the perfect example of low-impact manufacturing that Gildan strives for.
